Robin is an excellent barber! He was super friendly and great at helping my young son feel comfortable. He took care and precision with his cut. Robin clearly loves his work. The shop was also very clean. I highly recommend Robin!

I’d honestly rate this a 3.5 based off of the result in the end solely on what I was initially expecting, but because of the kindness and thoughtfulness of the staff, I’m bumping it up to a 4. Hear me out though:

This was my first visit to the salon, based on a recommendation from a friend who had a great experience and mentioned the very affordable price. Her hair turned out beautifully, so I decided to follow her suggestion and book an appointment with Emily.

When I arrived, however, I was assigned to Christine instead of Emily. Since I live quite far from downtown, I decided to go ahead with it and make the most of the trip.

Christine was incredibly kind and thoughtful—she even brought out a mini stand for my coffee so I wouldn’t have to keep reaching for it. She asked what I was looking for, and I mentioned that I’d like to trim a couple of inches off my dead ends, a little bit of layering and light styling.

The hair wash was great (lovely-smelling products!) and the scalp massage was very relaxing.

From my experience with several hairstylists in Calgary, it seemed like Christine was a bit cautious with cutting my hair. The length didn’t change much in the end, and since my hair naturally dries pin-straight and flat, I was a bit surprised when she used a straightener to solely re-straighten it. Usually, most stylists would add some soft waves or volume with the straightener or a curling iron. This could just be a different styling technique I’m not familiar with or perhaps their default method if no other instructions are given; but my roots weren’t dry at the end and my hair was left feeling slightly damp and quite flat.

With that being said though, I had accidentally left my hair clip behind, and Christine rushed out to try and find me, but when she couldn’t she kindly called me afterward to let me know. That was a thoughtful and considerate gesture, which spoke volumes to me.

To be fair, I could have been more vocal about my preferences during the appointment, and I don’t doubt Christine’s skill or intentions. I might give this salon another try in the future and reconfirm with them to book my appointment with Emily.

I visited Lighthouse for the first time a few weeks back and asked to have my roots done, blonde highlights and a cut. Christina provided my services. At first glance, I was fine with the end result - it looked ok in the lighting at Lighthouse. Once I had a chance to get up close in a mirror and see it in other lighting outside the salon, I was very unhappy with the colouring service. The roots were a light coppery red colour instead of a dark brown to match the rest of my hair — I've never seen anything like it actually, it almost looked like lightener had been applied? And as I started looking more into the highlights and taking photos of different sections, I saw how chunky and inconsistent they were - some even started more than an inch from my scalp. (They were brassy, too, but that was more a toning issue.)

The next day, I went back to collect a refund for colouring services (they had offered to have the same stylist try to fix it but I wasn't comfortable with that given how unhappy I was the first time). I had initially reached out for a refund for the root service ($80), but by the time I arrived I had become really unhappy with the highlights too, so I explained this to management hoping for more compensation since I would have to get all of the colour completely redone — it only seemed fair. I had paid $320.60 for colour and cut (including tip). I showed some of the attached photos to management and after some back and forth was compensated for an additional $40 back, meaning I only received a total of $120 back. I had to fight for that extra $40, which seemed ridiculous. I wasn't very happy but ultimately thought it was better than nothing and went on my way to another salon to have it fixed.

At the other salon, they expressed to me how very poorly done this job was and captured a photo of hair at the back of my head that really says it all (see attached) - I was left with giant strips of light brassy colour at my roots and was walking around like that for a day with no idea it had been so badly done. The salon had to break up the highlights with lowlights and completely redo my roots. That's a lot of chemicals on my head in a 24 hour period. That was another $300+ out of pocket, just to fix Lighthouse's mistakes.

So, I reached back out to Lighthouse, first to thank them for the partial refund, but then to say that I don't think it's fair I should have to pay for any of the colour service at all. I was happy to pay for the haircut, but everything else was objectively terribly done. Ultimately, they chose not to refund me and make things right. They did offer a discount on a follow up visit or complimentary haircut, neither of which were of any interest to me after this experience. Had I been refunded for all the colouring services, I wouldn't have felt inclined to leave this review, because I understand everyone has off days, but I don't think it should be this difficult to receive a refund for a job that wasn't done well and had to be entirely fixed. I'm ultimately out a lot of money (and time going back and forth on this) and am very disappointed.
